Incorporated in March 1994, Discount Tobacco Outlet purchased its first store the following September from a franchisee in Shelbyville, Tenn. By the end of the calendar year DTO had opened four other Tennessee stores—two in Nashville, one in Manchester, and one in Decherd.
In 1995 Discount Tobacco Outlet initiated an aggressive advertising campaign, teaming with Gaylord Entertainment’s radio and TV affiliates to help sponsor stock car driver Chad Chaffin’s #95 racing team. The successful campaign climaxed a season in which Chaffin won the Nashville Speedway track championship. Concurrent with that promotional effort, new store openings helped begin Discount Tobacco Outlet’s climb in becoming the household name for tobacco consumers across Middle Tennessee.
Over the ensuing years DTO opened more new stores and continued to expand its product line with beer, soft drinks, snacks, candy, coffee, food service, and other popular convenience merchandise. Today the chain successfully retails thousands of items throughout its stores.
With 23 locations across the Middle Tennessee area, Discount Tobacco Outlet, Inc. is one of the top retailers of tobacco products in the area.
